It happens (and if you are reading this post, it has either happened to you or someone you know): someone has stolen your social media identity by grabbing your photo, using your name and copying your bio word-for-word and that person is out there parading around pretending to be you, following your followers and destroying your reputation in the name of spam (or smarm).
It doesn’t matter. All that matters to you is getting your face, your online persona, your information off of THEIR profile…NOW!

What to Do If Someone Steals Your Social Media Identity

#1: Don’t Engage — Whatever you do, don’t confront them. If it is for nasty reasons, you don’t want to provoke further nastiness on their part. Best to work on quietly having their profile shut down by the social media platform instead of picking a fight with someone who you already know is not willing to play by the rules.

#2: Ask for Help — Enlist the support of your friends in getting their profile flagged (behind-the-scenes, of course). Often social media platforms, like Twitter, require a critical mass of abuse reports before they will shut an account down.

#3: Review the Policy — Check the official impersonation policy on the particular platform to see what you need to do to alert them to the identity theft. Facebook, for example, requires you report the timeline of the offending impersonator and follow the steps; whereas, Twitter asks you to fill out a form and fax a copy of your government issued ID.

#4: Take Screen Caps — Before reporting or alerting anyone of anything, document the situation by taking screen caps. This may become useful later as impersonators try to hide by blocking the person they are attempting to impersonate.

#5: Be Vigilant — Stick with it until the issue is resolved, remembering to document each step along the way so you have a paper trail to show if it is needed. This is YOUR identity we’re talking about here — defend it!

Freddy Gene Bussard

Freddy Gene Bussard, 84, of Topeka, went to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, December 3, 2016. He was born October 27, 1932 in Augusta County, VA, the son of Charles Anderson and Tishie (Sprouse) Bussard. Freddy graduated from Craigsville High School and immediately enlisted in the Air Force and served as an aircraft mechanic from 1951 -1955. In 1954, he married Wanda McPherson. They were married for 25 years and together had five children. They divorced in 1979.

He then married Sue (Banion) Heinisch in 1983. During his working life he was a Journeyman wireman with IBEW Local union 226, Topeka, KS where he was a member for 47 years. He also carried a master electrical and mechanical license for the City of Topeka. He then went to work for the Seaman School District as a HVAC/ Maintenance specialist until his retirement in 1994. Freddy was a lifelong outdoors enthusiast with a special fondness for crappie fishing as well as turkey and deer hunting. 

He was a generous and caring family man who never met a stranger. Survivors include his wife Sue; children Debra Welch of Topeka, Wanda Weltzin (Dave) of Lindsborg, Freddie Bussard of Topeka, David Bussard of Topeka and Kathy Rohrbach (Robert) of Topeka; three step-children, Ed Heinisch (Jeanine), Jean M. Everts and Jodie Heinisch, all of Topeka; 7 grandchildren, 5 step- grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Connie Spencer (Ray) of Baltimore, MD and a half sister, Elizabeth Ellinger. Freddy was preceded in death by a brother, Jake Anderson Bussard (Doris Brown) and a sister Lena (Puckett) McNeal. 

In keeping with Freddy s wishes cremation is planned and a memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm, Thursday, December 8 at Fairlawn Church of the Nazarene, 730 S.W. Fairlawn Rd. Topeka, KS 66606. At what speed does the Earth move around the Sun? (Beginner)

Short version: Earth's average orbital speed is about 30 kilometers per second. In other units, that's about 19 miles per second, or 67,000 miles per hour, or 110,000 kilometers per hour (110 million meters per hour).

In more detail:

Let's calculate that. First of all we know that in general, the distance you travel equals the speed at which you travel multiplied by the time (duration) of travel. If we reverse that, we get that the average speed is equal to the distance traveled over the time taken.

We also know that the time it takes for the Earth to go once around the Sun is one year. So, in order to know the speed, we just have to figure out the distance traveled by the Earth when it goes once around the Sun. To do that we will assume that the orbit of the Earth is circular (which is not exactly right, it is more like an ellipse, but for our purpose a circle is close enough). So the distance traveled in one year is just the circumference of the circle. (Remember, the circumference of a circle is equal to 2×π×radius.)

The average distance from the Earth to the Sun is about 149,600,000 km. (Astronomers call this an astronomical unit, or AU for short.) Therefore, in one year, the Earth travels a distance of 2×π×(149,600,000 km). This means that the speed is about:

speed = 2×π×(149,600,000 km)/(1 year)

and if we convert that to more meaningful units (knowing that there are, on average, about 365.25 days in a year, and 24 hours per day) we get:

speed = 107,000 km/h (or, if you prefer, 67,000 miles per hour)

So the Earth moves at about 110,000 km/h around the Sun (which is about one thousand times faster than the typical speed of a car on a highway!)

Cost Of The American Civil War

         The approximately 10,455 military engagements, some devastating to human life and some nearly bloodless, plus naval clashes, accidents, suicides, sicknesses, murders, and executions resulted in total casualties of 1,094,453 during the Civil War. The Federals lost 110,100 killed in action and mortally wounded, and another 224,580 to disease. The Confederates lost approximately 94,000 as a result of battle and another 164,000 to disease. Even if one survived a wound, any projectile that hit bone in either an arm or a leg almost invariably necessitated amputation. The best estimate of Federal army personnel wounded is 275,175; naval personnel wounded, 2,226. Surviving Confederate records indicate 194,026 wounded.

        In dollars and cents, the U.S. government estimated Jan. 1863 that the war was costing $2.5 million daily. A final official estimate in 1879 totaled $6,190,000,000. The Confederacy spent perhaps $2,099,808,707. By 1906 another $3.3 billion already had been spent by the U.S. government on Northerners' pensions and other veterans' benefits for former Federal soldiers. Southern states and private philanthropy provided benefits to the Confederate veterans. The amount spent on benefits eventually well exceeded the war's original cost.

        Inflation affected both Northern and Southern assets but hit those of the Confederacy harder. Northern currency fluctuated in value, and at its lowest point $2.59 in Federal paper money equaled $1 in gold. The Confederate currency so declined in purchasing power that eventually $60-$70 equaled a gold dollar.

        The physical devastation, almost all of it in the South, was enormous: burned or plundered homes, pillaged countryside, untold losses in crops and farm animals, ruined buildings and bridges, devastated college campuses, and neglected roads all left the South in ruins.

        Detailed studies of Union and Confederate military casualties are found in Numbers and Losses in the Civil War in America 1861-65 by Thomas L. Livermore (I901) and Regimental Losses in the American Civil War, 1867-1865 by William F. Fox (1889).
